I believe that we should always be working towards our purpose in life, dedicating ourselves towards self-mastery. Growing up, I was always that person others relied on when they needed someone to talk to; someone to help them see beyond their challenges. I always guided them to solutions even when it didn’t seem possible. It was my personal experience with grief and loss that led me to the work that I do today. I had lost my father at a young age and during my own struggle to accept the loss, my therapist helped me view my life with purpose and dedication. I knew that someday I wanted to help others do the same; take hardship they face and help them by shifting their perspective. I wanted to help them identify their strengths and view challenges as their inspiration to reach their desired goals. Since then, I have worked in various roles as a mentor, therapist, case manager, educational trainer and supervisor. All my roles have been dedicated to help others build on their interpersonal skills and self-confidence.
I have worked in this field for over a decade serving children, couples and families from various socioeconomic backgrounds. My role has been their advocate, helping to create a change within their environment (educational, foster care and healthcare). My work with individuals impacted by the foster care system, has taught me the power of positive attitude and mindset. Being able to approach constant barriers and challenges with a positive approach regardless of the Past trauma one has faced teaches you the power of attitude and perspective. Their resiliency and ability to remain positive has been inspiring for me in my career and personal life! All these years, what has brought me most joy is my work with children and families. My ability to connect with kids, help identify their inner strength, and help them connect with their families has been the most rewarding experience of my professional years. I strive to help my clients build confidence to handle peer pressure and voice their concerns so that they can continue to ask for support and handle any obstacle long after they are done with counseling. My work with couples has been helping them identify healthy communication patterns, cultural values, personal health problems, societal impacts and then develop unique expectations for their own relationship.
My education/training is in Marriage and family therapy, focusing on relationship and contextual factors that make up our family system. I work through a strength based focus; primarily Solution-focused and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Sessions are client driven and collaborative as we learn about contextual factors impacting the presenting concerns. Cultural values and beliefs are incorporated in therapy to help understand what has brought them to seek help and how that can be used to bring about change. CBT skills are incorporated to help manage emotions/behaviors that may come up as progress is made.
